02 Oct 1961, Berlin, Germany — 10/2/1961-Berlin, Germany- This general view of the Communist-constructed “death strip” in the Schoenholz area of Berlin shows the extent of Communist efforts to prevent any more refugees from reaching West Berlin. Behind the double, barbed-wire fence the ground has been cleared of all brush and a deep trench has been dug. Lamp posts with powerful lights have been erected to illuminate the border at night.
